Everything I Own is a movie about moving. But the relocation of filmmaker Andrew Garbus’ family is hardly just that. As his father explains early on in the film, “the reason for the move is that the family is, in essence and to a degree, breaking up.” Garbus’ parents are divorcing and the ordeal has put a complicated family history into sharp focus. Over the course of a few days, his childhood home is packed up; in the process, the family confronts the weight of its past and the uncertainty of its future. Everything I Own is an autodocumentary told with remarkable honesty, an all-access look at the implosion of a twenty-first century Jewish household. Scenes with his parents, explaining the significance of home videos and heirlooms, ground Garbus’ interrogation of his former domestic sanctuary. The film’s warm, lo-fi approach immediately invites its audience in, and Garbus leads them on a house tour filled with both love and heartbreak.
